9-12 Grade                          Choir

 

Course Description:  Choir is a class designed to meet the needs of students interested in vocal performance.  The choir will present a series of concerts throughout the year as well as compete in choral competitions.  Students wishing to participate in solo and ensemble events as well as individual competitions such as honor choirs and All-State will have the opportunity to do so.  A portion of each class period will be devoted to strengthening sight reading skills and improving vocal technique.

 

Resources:  Music and sight reading materials will be provided by the district.   Students wishing to participate in honor groups will be asked to purchase their own materials.  Music for contest will be selected from the OSSAA prescribed music list.

Supplies:  Each student must provide his/her own one inch black 3-ring binder and a paper pocket folder for worksheets.

 

I.          Choir – 1st Nine Weeks

            A.  Introduce sightreading

                        1.  Review  rhythms

                        2.  Review  pitches

            B.   Use solfeggio

                        1.  Introduce handsigns

                        2.  Use handsigns while singing

            C.   Prepare music for Fall Concert

                        1.  Incorporate sightreading into concert music reading

                        2.  Work on uniform vowels

                        3.  Work on proper choral tone

                        4.  Present Fall Concert (participation required)

            D.  Prepare for All-State auditions

            E.  Prepare and participate in Southwest Honor Choir

            F.  Use worksheets to strengthen music reading skills

 

II.        Choir – 2nd Nine Weeks

            A.  Continue sightreading exercises

            B.  Prepare music for Winter Concert
                        1.  Work on uniform vowels

                        2.  Work on proper choral tone.

                        3.  Present Winter Concert (participation required)

            C.  Participate in All-State Auditions for individual students

            D.  Use worksheets to strengthen music reading skills

 

III.       Choir – 3rd Nine Weeks

            A.  Continue sightreading exercises

            B.  Prepare music for choir contest

                        1.  Work on Mixed Chorus music

                        2.  Work on Treble Chorus music

                        3.  Work on Tenor/Bass Chorus music

            C.  Prepare for sightreading contest

                        1.  Work on Mixed Chorus sightreading

                        2.  Work on Treble Chorus sightreading

                        3.  Work on Tenor/Bass Chorus sightreading

            D.  Prepare individual students for solo contest

            E.  Work with groups on students interested in ensemble competition

            F.  Participate in All-State honor choir    

            G.  Participate in OSSAA District Choir Contest (participation required)

            H.  Use worksheets to strengthen music reading skills


IV.       Choir – 4th Nine Weeks          

            A.  Work with choirs qualifying for OSSAA State Choir Contest.

            B.  Work with individual students qualifying for state solo competition

            C.  Work with groups of students qualifying for state ensemble competition

            D.  Prepare music for spring concert

            E.  Participate in spring concert (participation required)

            F.  Prepare music for graduation exercises 

            G.  Use worksheets to strengthen music reading skills
